Our Story
About Our Pub
As custodians of the Wheatsheaf Beer House, we are proud to be part of a tradition that has served the people of Tattingstone for many generations.
The Wheatsheaf began life as a beerhouse, a type of establishment that became popular following the Beerhouse Act of 1830. For well over a century, it provided a place where local people could gather, share stories, and enjoy a pint at the heart of village life. The pub was granted a full licence on 22 April 1960, marking an important milestone in its history.
Our name reflects Tattingstone's rich agricultural heritage. A wheatsheaf, a bundle of harvested wheat, has long been a symbol of the farming community that shaped this beautiful Suffolk village and the surrounding countryside.
Over the years, the Wheatsheaf has witnessed countless changes in village life. Generations of local families, farm workers, visitors, and friends have passed through its doors. While other pubs have come and gone, the Wheatsheaf remains a place where people can come together, enjoy good company, and feel part of the community.
Since taking on the pub, we have been passionate about preserving its character and celebrating its history. That's why we proudly use the name "Wheatsheaf Beer House"—a nod to its origins and a reminder of the traditional values that make village pubs so special.
Although there is still more to discover about the earliest days of the building, one thing is certain: the Wheatsheaf has always been more than just a pub. It has been a meeting place, a community hub, and a home from home for many people over the years.
We are honoured to play our part in its story and look forward to welcoming both familiar faces and new visitors for many years to come.
